techUK response to Cambridge Analytica investigation

Commenting on the Cambridge Analytica investigation techUK CEO, Julian David, said:

"We are at the early stages of what is likely to be a complex and potentially significant investigation. There is a lot of detail that needs to be understood and we expect all companies to cooperate fully with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) as it undertakes its investigation. The UK is fortunate to have an expert and globally respected data protection regulator. However it is currently facing a significant workload as it oversees the implementation of new data protection laws (GDPR) in the UK. The Government should urgently consider whether further resources should be made available to the ICO in order to expedite both this investigation and its wider work in support of GDPR implementation.

There will be much debate about the implications of digital innovation for democratic societies over the coming weeks and months. It is likely that rules governing political campaigning may need to be revised to take account of technological innovations and new techniques such as the micro-targeting of political messages. Any new regulation should be based on informed debate on both the challenges and opportunities posed by new technologies."
