NIC to Launch 'Roads of the Future' Competition Next Week

Innovation competition 'Roads of the Future' will be open to applicants next week.

In November 2017, the NIC announced plans for an innovation competition focussing on “how to deliver a world-class road network in the UK ready for connected and autonomous vehicles”.

The 'Roads of the Future' competition, beginning on Monday 15 January 2018, will be launched with Innovate UK and Highways England. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 14 March 2018.

Applicants have two months to develop ideas for how to adapt roads for CAVs, to be judged by a jury appointed by NIC. Submissions are encouraged to consider issues including:

  • Road design
  • Traffic management
  • Regulatory adaptations

Five successful applicants will then receive £30 000 to further develop their ideas throughout May and August. These will once again be judged and the winning applicant will receive an additional £50 000.

Further information on the competition will be posted here on Monday 15 January, including links to competition documents and competition registration.

techUK wishes all applicants the best of luck, and is excited to see what innovative ideas the competition brings about.
