We were delighted to welcome Helen Walker, CTO at the Department for Education and her team to brief techUK members on their ongoing and upcoming programme of activity.
Helen Walker opened the session with an overview of DfE and technology directorate’s vision, services currently on offer and goals and objectives, which includes improving reliability and security and developing and recruiting highly capable and accountable people.
Dean Williams, Service Delivery Deputy Director, later took the stage and presented to members upcoming funding and demonstrated how DfE works with one of their SME suppliers. Dean stressed that DfE very much wants to engage with SMEs and encouraged small and medium-sized suppliers to bid for the business.
Leanna Green, Deputy Director of Technology Services, Saghir Akbar, Deputy Director of Cloud Infrastructure & Platforms and Mark Wilson, Head of Networks all presented their respective programme’s roadmaps, about which you can find on the slides.
We later heard from Alok Raj, Chief Architect and Head of Architecture Profession on what his role entails such as shaping the future pipeline of projects through early engagement and horizon scanning of future technology trends. The discipline of Enterprise Architecture is vital for DfE because millions of users rely on provided services every day.
Finally, Richard Smith, Associate Commercial Specialist-Senior Category Manager gave examples of ongoing and new requirements and DfE’s most common routes to market, which are amongst others G-Cloud, Network Services, and Tech Products. Richard also encouraged attendees to register for DfE e-procurement portal, you can register here.
techUK members found the briefing extremely useful and informative and we look forward to engaging with Helen and her team in the future.
