Giles Derrington, techUK’s Associate Director for Policy, chaired a panel on how companies can attract tech talent in an era of digital transformation. The event was organised by MIDAS and explored some of the challenges the industry and wider economy faces in the coming years. By 2020 it is estimated that there could be as many as 1 million unfilled jobs in the sector. This is having an impact on growth and it is estimated that we have lost £141 billion in lost GDP due to our skills gap.
The expert panel which included representatives from Raytheon, TalkTalk, Slalom and MIDAS explored how companies and organisations are competing for talent. Emphasis on aligning with employee’s requirements and a sense of company purpose were mentioned as some of the key tools necessary to secure and retain talent. The panel explored the importance of employer brand and working environment and acknowledged the need to make the sector more appealing to diverse backgrounds. The panel also explored how important it is for business to connect with our education system from an early stage and to help improve the talent pipeline, as well as explore UK wide solutions.
