techUK response to Ofcom consultation on enabling opps for innovation

techUK's Communications Infrastructure Council has responded to Ofcom's consultation document which sets out proposals on shared access to spectrum supporting mobile technology.

Spectrum provides the airwaves that support wireless services, including mobile phones, used by people and businesses every day. Ofcom manages the use of spectrum in the UK and their ambition is to see comprehensive mobile coverage for people across the UK, and to create opportunities for innovation across the UK economy.

This consultation refers on proposals to make spectrum available in a range of spectrum bands on a shared basis. This spectrum could support deployment of local networks in sectors including industrial Internet of Things (IoT), enterprise, logistics, mining and agriculture, as well as help to improve the quality of coverage in poorly served area. It also complements Ofcom’s proposals to award national licences for the 700 MHz and 3.6-3.8 GHz mobile spectrum by auction.
