SmarterUK Smart Energy and Utilities Group

techUK programme representing technology companies to the utility sector, supporting innovation in both infrastructure delivery and retail market services.

The government is determined to upgrade Britain’s energy infrastructure, which will require an estimated £20 billion of investment by 2020. Key to meeting this challenge is the application of technology to make energy networks smarter – more intelligent, more flexible and more efficient. The changes taking place in the sector are re-shaping established market structures and business relationships which have been in place for decades.

Smart Energy refers to the application of ICT across the end-to-end energy system, from generation to consumer experience, enabling greater understanding of energy generation, transmission, distribution and consumption and the ability to make it more intelligent and reduce cost and carbon.

For the ICT industry, smart energy is dominated by Smart Meters (the here and now), Smart Grid (what meters partly enable), renewable and micro energy generation, demand side response and energy storage.

techUK will work to:

  • Ensure smart systems, technologies and solutions are an integral part of the UK’s energy strategy and accelerate the development of the market.
  • Accelerate and help enable the deployment of smart grid solutions on the back of a successful smart meter roll-out and enable these to be incorporated into markets for smart homes; smart cities; and smart transport.

The group also focuses on wider innovation for the country's utilities, such as our water services and the development of smart city infrastructure.
