The Ministry of Defence is looking to engage with Enterprise Architects and technical SMEs to share its Technology Reference Model, fostering collaborative dialogue.
The purpose of the Technology Reference Model (TRM) is to bring clarity and structure to Defence’s extensive IT ecosystem. The TRM is a logical, layered view of Defence technologies - similar in concept to the OSI model - that categorises IT assets by type and behaviour. For Defence Digital and its suppliers, it provides a shared vocabulary for navigating Defence’s complex digital environment.
While Defence’s Digital function governs the TRM, industry will have the ability to propose managed changes through engagement to ensure the model remains relevant, market‑aware, and responsive to emerging technologies.
For Defence Digital and its suppliers the TRM means:
A clearer architectural framework aligned to Defence needs
More predictable technology roadmaps
Better‑informed solution design and integration
Reduced complexity when working across multi‑supplier environments
As the TRM matures, its greatest value will come from shared adoption. By using a common view of Defence’s technology landscape, UK Ministry of Defence and industry can work together more effectively to deliver a resilient, coherent, and future‑ready digital backbone for UK Defence.
This private workshop is open to subject matter experts working in the enterprise architecture and software space (one per company). Attendance by Small Medium Enterprises is strongly encouraged. Please complete the form to express an interest in participating.
Confirmations will be sent by Friday 13 March.
