About this event

The North East has set out a clear ambition for AI through its AI Growth Zone, and the focus is now turning to delivery. AI Skills and Growth brings together employers, investors, universities, colleges, schools and regional partners to examine the skills, leadership and partnerships the region needs to turn that ambition into growth, from the classroom through to the boardroom.

Co-convened by Newcastle University and techUK,  the day runs two parallel streams, one focused on business growth and AI adoption and one on education and inclusion, that come together in the opening and closing plenary sessions. It is the first in a planned series of events, held roughly every six months, designed to build lasting relationships between the region's companies, its education partners and Newcastle University. A short note of findings and follow-up actions will be circulated after the day.

Why now

The North East is one of the DfE's designated Mission North East regions, and the arrival of an AI Growth Zone gives the region a real opportunity to lead. But that opportunity depends on a workforce, a school system and a higher education sector that can develop and deploy AI skills at scale. Demand from employers is already outpacing supply, and without deliberate investment in education and skills the gap will widen. techUK has been working with national education and technology organisations to examine what that investment should look like. This event brings that work into a regional context, and creates space for partners and colleagues North East to define what comes next.
