Welcome to 2018 – the year of GDPR and the HM Government's Year of Engineering! To celebrate, we have our first monthly update for you.

To quickly introduce myself, I'm Jess - the new Programme Manager for SmarterUK (Transport and Smart Cities). I am looking forward to a big year of all things Smart, and to meeting you all, sooner rather than later! Please do get in touch if you have any ideas, concerns or comments.

If January is setting the benchmark, this is going to be a busy year! So far we have bid farewell and best wishes to Aimee... techUK's President Jaqueline de Rojas received a CBE for Services to International Trade in Tech... BEIS and the Automotive Council announced the first Automotive Sector Deal... the NIC launched its 'Roads of the Future' competition...and the Cabinet reshuffle delivered a new Minister of State at the Department for Transport, Jo Johnson.

The World Economic Forum published its Global Risks Report 2018 earlier this month. This year, for the first time in the report’s history, there are two technological risks (Cyber attacks and Data fraud or theft) in the top 5 most likely to occur. We have kept this in mind as we developed the various work programmes for SmarterUK. As we power ahead with our work to ensure the UK is at the forefront of the Smart revolution in all aspects, we will continue to prioritise cybersecurity to keep the UK protected against such critical and increasingly threatening risks.

The Ofgem Innovation Link Roundtable on Tuesday 23 January brought energy innovators together to hear the latest on Innovation Link and lessons from October's Regulatory Sandbox, share views on how to increase engagement from companies outside of the energy market as well as learning more about the benefits of techUK's SmarterUK Energy and Utilities Programme.

techUK's first Introductory Evening took place on Wednesday 24 January. Matt gave a run-down of last year's work, and what this year's SmarterUK programme will look like. It also provided a great networking opportunity for members and non-members. There are three more this year, so if you or someone you know missed this one, you only have to wait until May.

The meeting write-up and presentations for the Putting the User back into Transport Innovation – Use Cases for Data workshop have been published and are available for download.

So that’s a wrap on January... Looking to February, if you’re not already attending the Future of the IoT: Innovation, Security and Skills conference on February 7 in Bristol, there is still time to register! Don’t miss out on your chance to be there...and to get out of London for a day!
