Safer Internet Day: Building Online Safety Practices with Young People

Safer Internet Day 2018 will be celebrated globally today with the slogan ‘Create, Connect and Share Respect: a better internet starts with you.’

Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the celebration sees hundreds of organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

The day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet.

techUK is excited to be part of the UK-wide social media campaign #ItStartsWithUs which encourages everyone to share how they will make the internet a better place. The day began with a mass tweet reaching millions of people and kick starting a day of trending.

At techUK we are celebrating the work of our members and shining a light on this important issue.

Julian David, CEO of techUK states:

“Every year, tech innovations bring to new products, new opportunities and new challenges. Safer Internet Day 2018 shines a light on the importance of creating, connecting and sharing respect as we use new online tools. We are pleased to be a partner for this important initiative which provides a constructive platform for industry, Government and the public for critical thought and potential solutions, so that children are safe and supported online.”

Will Gardner, Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre, states:

“Safer Internet Day is a moment in the year where everyone across the UK can unite to celebrate the internet and make it a better place. Whether you are a young person, parent, carer, school or organisation, we can all take positive actions to make the internet a better place. We have seen record numbers of organisations pledging their support for the day making it the UK’s biggest campaign to inspire children and young people to use technology safely and positively. It is this collaboration that helps to ensure Safer Internet Day has such a positive impact, reaching 42% of UK children in 2017 and growing year on year.”
