With the amount of available data growing exponentially this is a risk to all organisations in all sectors. MOD has access to a vast amount of data in both the business and operational space with the challenge now to utilise this data to improve efficiency and efficacy. This techUK briefing will examine how emerging technologies such as data analytics and AI, along with improved processes and structures, may help MOD and its partner organisations to improve operational capability through better utilisation of data.

The security restrictions of Defence means that often data is not always able to be shared, is siloed by command, function or is commercially sensitive. With better understanding there remains potential for greater efficiency and enhanced capability in a wide range of areas. Attendees will examine where this potential can best be liberated using a number of emerging technologies in the AI and analytics sectors. The human element will be discussed in terms of how improved exploitation of data resources can lead to better decision making and can make available resources in traditionally dull but time consuming tasks. How digital technologies can be pulled through from other sectors and applied to Defence will be a key area of discussion, hearing from some exemplars of best practice and discussing shared challenges.

We are delighted that Major General Thomas Copinger-Symes CBE, General Officer Commanding, Force Troops Command, Army and Gerry Cantwell, Chief Information Officer, National Crime Agency will be joining us as speakers.

We will also be approaching further speakers in the build-up to the event.
http://www.techuk.org/events/meeting/item/12630-west-yorkshire-police-pre-procurement-supplier-engagement-event West Yorkshire Police: Pre-Procurement Supplier Engagement Event http://www.techuk.org/events/meeting/item/12630-west-yorkshire-police-pre-procurement-supplier-engagement-event Thu, 08 Mar 2018 22:53:42 +0000 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org The PCC for West Yorkshire is looking to engage the supplier community ahead of undertaking a procurement exercise for an off the shelf ERP solution. A key driver behind this is hybrid cloud. But whilst the benefits of hybrid cloud are clear, the journey to cloud presents a security challenge.

Most organisations are already part way along their digital transformation and are already investing in a hybrid cloud. So how can this investment be enabled securely? And how can you do this at an acceptable cost?

What started as a simple extension of traditional security principles into the cloud has become more complex with new market entrants and incumbent vendors launching competing, siloed cloud security offerings. In addition, the threat facing cloud services has morphed considerably as cyber attackers jump between cloud service providers and their customers using ‘supply chain’ infiltration techniques. The full range of services required can be seen in the graphic below. All suppliers are encouraged, with the modular nature of the procurement allowing innovation to take a leading role in delivery of functionality.
CORTISONE is also looking to the future – to exploit innovations which will align with NHS strategy virtualise healthcare and healthcare integrate services across the healthcare sector.. This is above Adult Social Care for the first time in at least three years, suggesting that councils are no longer able to shield these services from the worst of the ongoing budget cuts in local government.

Figures from London Councils also show that in 2015/16, three quarters of English councils surpassed their Children’s Social Care budgets by a combined £605m – over a 7% overspend. A £2 billion funding gap in Children’s Services is projected by 2020 and as of 31 March 2017, 90 children are coming into care every day.

These stark figures show that many councils will not be able to continue to deliver Children’s Services as they currently are. We need to re-imagine how services can be delivered in order to give families the information they need and to empower individuals to access the right services at the right time. Digital can play an enabling role in supporting service design to improve outcomes and data can be utilised to manage ever-growing demand on services by identifying the best way to tackle the problem at its source.

There are a number of good examples of councils taking a data-led transformation approach of children’s social care. For instance, Newcastle Council’s data-informed changes to Children’s Services help social workers deal with complex family needs better whilst also being able to identify factors that can predict a child becoming NEET, enabling earlier intervention.

This timely roundtable, hosted by techUK and LGiU, will be an opportunity to bring together senior local government representatives and tech industry specialists to discuss how a digital approach can support service redesign. We will explore how data can be used more effectively to manage demand on children services and lead to prevention strategies. It will be a chance to learn and share what colleagues in other councils are already doing, as well as to discuss the potential of digital to transform service outcomes.

Key questions this roundtable will explore include:

How are councils currently using data and technology to deliver Children’s Services?

How can we harness the power of data to deliver targeted care to families and predict demand?

How can councils overcome data sharing obstacles to collaborate more effectively with key partners in health, justice and the voluntary sector to protect vulnerable children?

How can we place data at the heart of service design?

What barriers may prevent councils from maximising the value of their data? How might these be overcome? For example, lack of leadership, legal compliance issues, staff skills gaps and ethical considerations.

Given the format of the event places are limited. This involves a transition from the relatively simple, traditional transmission and distribution model with electricity passing one way from a small number of generators to consumer premises to a more complex ‘mesh-like’ network with a much greater number and diversity of generation points, including renewable sources which are by nature intermittent and a 2-way flow of energy across the network.

The availability of a fit for purpose communications infrastructure goes hand in hand with the implementation of the smart grid because of the significantly greater need for monitoring, control and automation and the associated increase in data volumes to be transported.

Such fit for purpose communications infrastructure entails a mix of technologies – fixed line (fibre), wireless and satellite provided via public communications services and private (self-provided) ones. However, given the need for emergency battery life, security, flexibility etc. private wireless networks remain an important part of utilities’ portfolio of communications service provision. The UK faces a unique challenge in terms of available spectrum when it comes to upgrading such private networks to wider channel IP-based systems.

This meeting brings together senior colleagues from Government, Ofcom, the energy distribution sector and the telecoms industry from the UK and overseas to
- share perspectives on UK and international activities on smart grid implementation and associated fit for purpose communications infrastructure
- clarify the (spectrum) challenges and the roles of different actors in resolving these, and
- build a joint vision for achieving fit for purpose communications services for emerging energy networks.
http://www.techuk.org/events/partner-event/item/12059-thames-valley-tech-awards-2018 Thames Valley Tech Awards 2018 http://www.techuk.org/events/partner-event/item/12059-thames-valley-tech-awards-2018 Tue, 09 Jan 2018 10:29:51 +0000 Benjamin Manby(techUK) benjamin.manby@techuk.org The first Thames Valley Tech Awards will be staged by The Business Magazine on 24 May 2018, and will be a major focal point for the sector.
Thames Valley referred to as the UK’s Silicon Valley - Book your ticket to the first Thames Valley Tech Awards 2018

Now, Elcot Media & Events – the premier business events organiser in the region – is launching the Thames Valley Tech Awards.
