Whilst they may appear different in their outcomes, they are both enabled by the adoption of collaborative and digital first approaches to leadership that require engagement with and understanding of the solutions that the tech community can provide.

So what does a collaborative, digital-first approach mean? These are more than just buzzwords, and when applied correctly in a local authority context, have the potential to deliver tangible benefits to public service delivery and the implementation of smart city and community initiatives. Local government has a role to play in creating the culture and infrastructure for ‘smart places and communities’ to gain traction.

This begins with an understanding of digital as more than just shiny new technology. It is important that digitally-enabled solutions also integrate a collaborative and user-centric approach to doing things both smarter and differently. A truly smart place will be more connected to its citizens, communities and businesses, with the whole community reaping the benefits.

At this event we will be exploring the synergies between smart places and digital transformation, and launching our new report on “What makes a ‘Good’ Digital Board?”, which explores how local authorities can draw upon the expertise and knowledge from local tech players to lead local authorities through an ever-evolving technology landscape.

This joint event between the Local Government and SmarterUK programmes will be an opportunity to bring together stakeholders and industry members from across the smart cities and transformation agenda to discuss how we can better collaborate and put in place the conditions that will create places where citizens want to live, work and thrive.

Registration is at 14.30 and drinks and networking from 17.00

Speakers Confirmed include:

Nathan Pierce, Head of Smart London Team & Programme Director of Sharing Cities, Greater London Authority

Jen Hawes-Hewitt, Global Cities - Consulting and UK Lead, Accenture

Kulveer Ranger, Vice-President, Strategy & Communications, Atos UK

Councillor Stephen Canning, Essex County Council

Contact: Jessica.Russell@techuk.orgContact: georgina.maratheftis@techuk.org http://www.techuk.org/events/meeting/item/12835-data-centres-risk-radar-save-the-date Data Centres Risk Radar **Save the Date** http://www.techuk.org/events/meeting/item/12835-data-centres-risk-radar-save-the-date Tue, 17 Apr 2018 08:54:35 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org Risk Radar
Registration from 5pm. By 2040, one in 7 people in the UK will be aged over 75. The figures show the UK’s population is getting an older. The challenge an ageing population places on public services is well publicised, but this challenge also brings an opportunity for industry, researchers and the public sector to better work together to support our ageing population live longer, healthier and happier lives. Digital technology is a major contributor to helping achieve these goals by allowing for greater monitoring and earlier diagnosis of health conditions as well as helping to energise behavioral change.

As such, techUK has been working with some of the organisations who are in the frontline of the challenges that our ageing society poses - HACT, the Health Innovation Network (South London Academic Health Science Network), the Local Government Association (LGA), Socitm, Suffolk Council and others - to come up with problem statements that industry and public service leaders from across housing, local government and health can workshop through solutions together on the day.

What will the day entail..

It will be an interactive session with delegates working in groups reviewing challenges that cut across social isolation; falls and prevention; physical activity to cultural changes. It will ensure all UK police forces have a secure platform and national standards that enable new ways of working and collaborating; whilst maintaining the autonomy for local decision-making and the control of their digital assets.

This event is an excellent opportunity for suppliers to improve their understanding of the police tech landscape, learn how best to engage, and ask any questions they have of senior stakeholders from the Police ICT Company and National Police Technology Council.

After the talks the speakers will take part in a panel discussion, which will then be followed by drinks and networking.

Speakers:

Chair: Mark Goossens, IBM and Vice-Chair of techUK's Justice & Emergency Services Committee

Ian Bell, CEO of the Police ICT Company

Wayne Parkes, Programme Director, National Enabling Programme
Contact: Charlie.Wyatt@techuk.orgContact: henry.rex@techuk.org http://www.techuk.org/events/meeting/item/13829-cw-technology-engineering-conference-2018 CW Technology & Engineering Conference 2018 http://www.techuk.org/events/meeting/item/13829-cw-technology-engineering-conference-2018 Thu, 30 Aug 2018 10:07:39 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org The 4th CW Technology & Engineering Conference 2018 - The inevitable automation of Next Gen Networks
**techUK members receive a special 25% discount off listed ticket prices using the code 4HX9RS4E. Reserve your place here and ensure you use the code to receive the discount.**

Date: Thursday 27 September 2018
Venue: Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, William Gates Building, 15 J J Thomson Ave, Cambridge CB3 0FD

Communications networks are perhaps the most complex machines on the planet. They use vast amounts of hardware, rely on complex software, and are physically distributed over land, underwater, and in orbit. They increasingly provide essential services that underpin almost every aspect of life. Managing networks and optimising their performance is a vast challenge, and will become many times harder with the advent of 5G. The 4th Annual CW Technology Conference will explore this challenge and how Machine Learning and AI may be applied to build more reliable, secure and better performing networks.

Is the AI community aware of the challenges facing network providers? Are the network operators and providers aware of how the very latest developments in AI may provide solutions? The conference will aim to bridge the gap between AI/ML and communications network communities, making each more aware of the nature and scale of the problems and the potential solutions.

This one day conference, held at the University of Cambridge Computer Lab on September 27th 2018, is aimed at data scientists and network engineers in universities, infrastructure suppliers, and software providers.

The annual CW TEC provides a vibrant and dynamic form for harnessing knowledge, driving lively debate and networking at a senior level. It offers a more low-level, technical and focused agenda than the International Conference, exploring an emerging problem space that the CW community has highlighted as being particularly worthy of debate. Past event topics have included quantum computing and the impact on spectral value of mobile, satellite, TV, IoT and wearable technologies. The conference format and agenda is driven by the CW membership and this year the organising committee includes Steve Unger, John Haine, Sylvia Lu, Paul Ceely, Phil Claridge and Zahid Ghadialy.

**techUK members receive a special 25% discount off listed ticket prices using the code 4HX9RS4E. Reserve your place here and ensure you use the code to receive the discount.**
http://www.techuk.org/events/briefing/item/13332-techuk-isc-briefing-on-cyber-skills-and-defence techUK ISC Briefing on Cyber Skills and Defence http://www.techuk.org/events/briefing/item/13332-techuk-isc-briefing-on-cyber-skills-and-defence Fri, 15 Jun 2018 09:48:58 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org techUK ISF Briefing on Cyber Skills across Defence.
The cyber skills gap is a real challenge for all UK sectors. In Defence, we have recently seen a renewed focus from senior leaders including VCDS and CGS on the future importance of information warfare and capability, which re-inforces that cyber skills will be increasingly important in all areas of the military. This techUK Information Superiority Council Briefing will be an opportunity to discuss the challenges facing UK defence in ensuring its workforce has sufficient cyber skills, examining the shared cross industry challenges as well as those areas where Defence has unique challenges.

One key issue to be discussed will be how the military can best utilise civilian expertise, in the same way that 77 Brigade has pioneered using a mixture of regulars and reservists. Using innovative career pathways like this and secondee programmes are a good way of bringing skills into MOD. Upskilling current service people will also be a topic for discussion, particularly in terms of raising awareness of cyber threats and ensuring sufficient cyber hygiene is practiced throughout all functions. The MOD already has £120 million set aside for recruitment in this area so another area for discussion will focus around how MOD can better market the uniquely challenging roles it has, which can’t be found in the private sector.

We are delighted that the following speakers have confirmed their participation:

Air Cdre Tim Neal-Hopes, Head Joint User C4ISR & Cyber, MOD

Speaker confirmed from BT.

Steve Treharne, Director, Warner McCall Resilience

Further speakers from Government and industry will be confirmed in due course.
Contact: talal.rajab@techuk.orgContact: dan.patefield@techuk.orgContact: fred.sugden@techuk.org http://www.techuk.org/events/meeting/item/12842-trade-and-customs-compliance-group-meeting Trade and Customs Compliance Group meeting http://www.techuk.org/events/meeting/item/12842-trade-and-customs-compliance-group-meeting Tue, 17 Apr 2018 09:17:39 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org The Trade & Customs Compliance Group is the policy work forum on export controls, dual-use, defence exports, customs and the rules around international trade.
Our next Trade and Customs Compliance Group meeting will take place on on 27 September 2018.

At this next quarterly meeting we will continue to focus discussion on concerns related to International Trade, following the decision to exit the EU, as well as updates on licencing and SPIRE/LITE development.

For more information, please contact:
Contact: lucas.banach@techuk.orgContact: craig.melson@techuk.org http://www.techuk.org/events/conference/item/13937-techuk-conference-call-dcms-secure-by-design-project techUK Conference Call | DCMS Secure by Design Project http://www.techuk.org/events/conference/item/13937-techuk-conference-call-dcms-secure-by-design-project Mon, 17 Sep 2018 15:39:38 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org techUK Conference call to discuss DCMS Secure by Design Project in advance of publication
Dial in: 033 0336 1373 Pin: 217540

techUK has been involved in DCMS’ Secure by Design project since its inception. The Maritime Underwater Future Capability (MUFC) project has been established to assess future capability requirements and develop options to perform operations and tasks within the underwater environment when the current Astute Class Submarines leave service.

2. The MUFC project moved into Initial Concept Phase earlier in 2018 and, as part of this work, is seeking to expand its involvement with Industry, at all levels, in exploring new and potentially radical technological, operational and commercial solutions to the challenges facing the MOD. In the face of sometimes rapid technical, military and environmental changes, these challenges include, but are not limited to:

a) Exploitation of the underwater environment, including the challenges and opportunities of underwater detection and communication;

b) Improving availability, flexibility, affordability and supportability of capability solutions;

c) Optimising the time taken from concept phase through design and to manufacture of solution;

3. Although the current capability solutions are delivered by submarine platforms, no decisions have yet been taken on what the future capability requirements will be nor the solutions composition. The MUFC Project Team are keen to explore a wider set of potential solutions for example, alternative platforms and systems, including organic off-board sensors carried (hosted) by a manned submarine or surface ship, vehicles that are independent (autonomous) and/or deployed from manned surface and air platforms.

4. As well as these capability-based challenges, we are open to exploring different approaches to supplier engagement and supply chain sustainability, optimisation and capability. As part of this intent, the MUFC Project Team are hosting an Industry Day attended by senior personnel from the Defence Nuclear Organisation and Submarine Delivery Agency.

5. Expressions of interest in this event are now sought from companies wishing to attend. Attendees will be invited to consider in advance how you might be able to help meet these unique challenges and support the MUFC Project Team in delivering this capability solution, either differently and/or better than we have in the past. Digital connectivity is an essential, though often overlooked part of this work and many are unaware how it can transform this sector. The option for a 5G network can open up fresh opportunities for the development and delivery of health care systems across the UK. From remote patient monitoring and using real-time data in urgent responses for diagnostic conditions to VR/AR capabilities for staff training purposes.

The Government emphasises in its Digital Strategy the importance of building a world-class digital infrastructure for the UK. It has a clear ambition for the UK to be a global leader in the next generation of mobile technology (5G) and how it could also support significant efficiencies in public service delivery such as health services and education.

And as the UK prepares for the future of a fifth generation network, we want to explore just how much 5G could transform the health and social care sector to improve well-being and health by providing them with real-time intelligence and unparalleled situational awareness.

This event will explore how 5G can transform future healthcare applications and services and the connectivity required to facilitate these services. This includes:

evaluating diagnostics with the upcoming fifth generation network data and

diagnosing, monitoring and treating patients in hospital and in the home around the UK.

The aim is to raise awareness of digital connectivity in the healthcare sector and highlight the work of organisations operating in this field (ranging from innovation centres, industry and SME's) using products, networks and services that are directly helping patients, citizens, and health and care professionals.

Speakers Include:

Professor Joe Spencer, University of Liverpool and academic lead for Sensor City

James Champion, Business Development Manager, Qualcomm Life

Contact: kate.francis@techuk.orgContact: sophie.weston@techuk.org http://www.techuk.org/events/briefing/item/13852-help-shape-the-supplier-commitment-local-digital-declaration Help Shape the Supplier Commitment Local Digital Declaration http://www.techuk.org/events/briefing/item/13852-help-shape-the-supplier-commitment-local-digital-declaration Tue, 04 Sep 2018 12:11:21 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org Join techUK and MHCLG to help shape the supplier response to the Local Digital Declaration
This summer saw the launch of the Local Digital Declaration, a shared ambition for the future of local public services written by a collective of local authorities, sector bodies and government departments. Globally the space industry is undergoing a revolution (“New Space”) with new technologies enabling new business models, and a transition from being overwhelmingly publicly funded to private, and from principally serving public customers to private ones.

Commercial space activity already comprises about three quarters of the total global space economy, but modern commercial investment models demand with much faster concept to service delivery timelines, and lower cost. This is being achieved with new production techniques, influenced by other sectors, deploying smaller satellites enabled by new technologies, and the widespread adoption of commercial off-the-shelf components (COTS).

This has created a demand for lower cost launch systems, optimised for small satellites (which the UK space sector is disproportionally good at), which has resulted in the UK’s Government’s recent announcement of a location in Scotland for a spaceport for vertical launch.

But cost-effectively designing, building and launching satellites is only part of the New Space challenge – the Ground Segment also needs to be fit for purpose. The requirements for Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) systems may be very different when a small satellite has a value of $1-2 million, and could be replaced relatively quickly, from that supporting a traditional commercial satellite with a value of $100-500 million, which would take years to replace. Additionally user antennas may also look rather different if they are continually having to re-acquire connections from amongst thousands of small satellites in a constellation, each taking about 90 minutes to circle the Earth, by comparison to an antenna focussed on a traditional satellite in a geostationary orbit - plus, if every other element of a constellation has to be (relatively) low cost, these new antennas will have to be too.

The opportunities for getting New Space right are enormous, as lower cost, lower latency, quicker-to-market satellites will open up new commercial applications. But this requires each element to deliver - technically, on time, and to cost.

This conference - organised by techUK, the IET and the KTN - will explore new developments, and remaining obstacles, to enabling New Space – both in the Space Segment and the Ground Segment – with speakers representing companies from across the market.
Contact: julian.mcgougan@techuk.org http://www.techuk.org/events/opportunity/item/13690-technology-mission-to-singapore-and-malaysia Technology mission to Singapore and Malaysia http://www.techuk.org/events/opportunity/item/13690-technology-mission-to-singapore-and-malaysia Fri, 10 Aug 2018 11:20:07 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org Join DIT at the Technology Mission 2018
The UK’s Department for International Trade invites you to register interest for the Technology Missions to Singapore and Malaysia from 22 – 25 October 2018. A recent PWC report highlighted that increased drone adoption across the economy could increase UK GDP by £42 billion (or 2%) by 2030.

The market for drones is rapidly developing with new user cases emerging all the time. Of all the various user cases, perhaps the easiest one to make and win public support for is emergency services using drone technology to save lives and improve public safety.

Across the blue lights agencies there are already a handful of examples of drone use for public safety. So the real issue is how UK emergency services can take drone use from small pockets of use by a few agencies, to becoming a regular feature in incident response, making drones business as usual for blue-lights services.

This event is designed to try and bridge that gap, allowing industry and end-users the chance to share best practice and lessons about what works. We will explore what made successful projects work, barriers to adoption (cost, policy, skills) what lessons were learned along the way, and how operational staff can drive the drone agenda within their organisation.

As well as addressing the technology and the operational case, we will look at how to make the business case, where drones responsibility sits in different agencies, and the different requirements and issues for rural and urban use. Crucially, speakers will explore what industry can do to help blue lights agencies make the case for drones.
Contact: craig.melson@techuk.orgContact: julian.mcgougan@techuk.orgContact: henry.rex@techuk.org http://www.techuk.org/events/partner-event/item/13620-seacon-2018-the-study-of-enterprise-agility-conference SEACON 2018 (The Study of Enterprise Agility Conference) http://www.techuk.org/events/partner-event/item/13620-seacon-2018-the-study-of-enterprise-agility-conference Fri, 03 Aug 2018 07:56:31 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org ENGAGE. For a marketplace to be successful, there needs to be a balance between demand and supply, and these classes will look at how this might be achieved.

There will be expert speakers at the events from NHS England, NHS Clinical Commissioners, The Kings Fund, The Academic Health Science Networks, to name a few. The classes will be chaired by Professor Mike Bewick, a former deputy medical director at NHS England.

Opportunities

There are limited opportunities for provider organisations to present to attendees and to join panel discussions. There are also opportunities to exhibit. These will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

The events are targeted at commissioners and senior decision makers, and therefore provide a valuable opportunity to suppliers of digital health and care solutions to showcase their products and services. There will be a drinks reception where there will be opportunity to network.

Discounts

techUK members wishing to exhibit at either of the Masterclasses can enjoy a 20% discount on quoted prices.

To get your discounts, please quote either of the following codes (depending on which classes you would like to exhibit at). The target sectors include Smart Cities, Fintech, Cyber Security, AI and IoT.

Participation is open to both SBJBC members and non-members, but will be restricted to a maximum of 25 delegates. Companies will be invited to register interest shortly, but an early bird opportunity to confirm interest is now available. If you would like to take this up, please click here to register.

With high demand for digital services and the recent launch of Saudi Fintech and e-government initiatives, Saudi Arabia hosts the largest ICT market in the region. More young people and increasingly women are starting their own businesses. A number of smart city initiatives have been launched in the buildings, transport, parking, communications and environmental sectors, and a futuristic new city NEOM has been unveiled. Saudi Arabia is keen to access innovative UK expertise and investment. The Saudi SME Authority is leading efforts to improve the business environment for SMEs, and support both start-ups and scale-ups. This is therefore an excellent time for UK companies, funds and advisers to engage.

The plan is to spend two days in Jeddah (18-19 November) and two days in Riyadh (20-21 November). The programme is currently being developed, but will include meetings with key industry and governmental stakeholders, including SAGIA, Saudi SME Authority, SABIC and the Ministry of Communications and IT. We will also meet with some of the innovation hubs who attended the SME Forum, including King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Wadi Makkah Company and King Saud University.

The delegation will be led by Chris Innes-Hopkins, SBJBC UK Executive Director, who has extensive public and private sector experience of the country. Saudi SBJBC members and investors will be involved, and the mission has the support of SAGIA and the DIT.

We will levy a modest programme management fee (with discounts for SBJBC members and SMEs). Participants will be expected to make their own external travel and visa arrangements, but group hotel rates will be offered and local transport arranged.

SBJBC programme management will include the following:

Logistical guidance and advice with visas

Pre-mission briefing with the support of SAGIA, the Saudi Embassy and DIT.

Meetings with key Saudi stakeholders, potential clients and investors

Networking reception with SBJBC Saudi Members

Group transport to meetings from pre-arranged pick up points

Again, interest can be registered here.
http://www.techuk.org/events/briefing/item/13483-agile-warrior-unlocking-the-urban-symposium Agile Warrior Unlocking The Urban Symposium http://www.techuk.org/events/briefing/item/13483-agile-warrior-unlocking-the-urban-symposium Wed, 11 Jul 2018 14:45:29 +0100 CRM Sync noreply@techuk.org Army HQ Concepts Team are holding a 3 day symposium entitled 'Unlocking the Urban'
CALL FOR PAPERS: Army HQ Concepts Team are holding a 3 day symposium entitled 'Unlocking the Urban' with the aim of unlocking the challenges of urban operations for future forces.

Why? - the traditional Western military advantages of range, speed and firepower are largely negated by the complexity of the urban environment.

Army HQ want you to contribute either by presenting and/or coming along.
